Colorado and Wyoming Cowboys Compete in First Annual Table Mountain Ranch Roping and Stock Horse Challenge

Big Loops Fill the Sky
By Terry Bowman

Lainie and Ray Whitmire opened up their magnificent Table Mountain Ranch in Virginia Dale, CO/Tie Siding, WY for a one day ranch roping and stock horse contest on Saturday, May 16th. This was the inaugural competition for the newly-formed Rocky Mountain Ranch Roping Stock Horse Association.

Roping at Table Mountain Ranch

Ranch Roping and Stock Horse events are popping up like puppies on a flatbed, but few have matched the scenery, ground, corrals and warm hospitality provided by the crew at Table Mountain Ranch.

All those who attended Saturday were grateful to their hosts and the Good Lord who made the scenery and brought out the afternoon sun. The ranch is among the most picturesque in the West with numerous granite outcroppings, buttes and mesas, whispering pines and lush pastures leading down valley toward a classic view of 13,000 foot snow capped peaks, forty miles to the south.

The contest began at 8:30am under morning clouds and a cool mist with three-man teams comprised of cowboys from as far as Rawlings, Wyoming and Kiowa, Brush and Conifer, Colorado.

Lunch at Table Mountain Ranch

Twenty teams showed off their talent with a variety of fancy loops and slick horn dallies. After two go rounds, five teams advanced to a final roping which came down to Ash Corelett's Houlihan over-the-hip-heel-shot which earned enough points to secure victory for him and teammates Matt Turner and Merritt Carpenter. They took home custom headstalls made by Spencer George along with jackpot money. Second place took home jackpot money as well as custom breast collars, donated by Bill Daniels of Laramie, Wyoming.

A hot lunch was served by Valerie Rigali and Jennifer Turner out the back end of a 30' stock trailer. The Sloppy Joes and M'Ms were a big hit with the gaggle of kids that spent the day ridin', runnin' and raisin' dust. Valerie commented, "The smiles and manners of these cowboys were great. They were patient, full of fun and a pleasure to serve." During lunch live music was provided by Terry Bowman.

Stock Horse Competiton

The sun then broke through the clouds to warm contestants and onlookers as the arena was dragged by Russell Clark for the next event, the Stock Horse Challenge.

The Stock Horse Challenge had thirteen entries. Most of these horses came straight off the ranch where they do everyday ranch work. It gave these cowboys a chance to bring their favorite horse to town to compete against peers. The Stock Horse Challenge included dry work, boxing, going down the fence and heading which gave extra points to those who got off their horses and showed their ability to work a rope.

The competition was tight between Jeb Roake, Craig Carr and Russell Speaker. Coming out on top was birthday boy Jeb who took home a silver Garcia bit donated by sponsor, Rich Scott - Vision of Unity Horsemanship. What a birthday present!

Following the stock horse event, spirits remained high as the sun continued to still fill the sky. A new jackpot was put together and two man teams competed in Ranch Doctoring which involved roping and stretching-out one animal in the arena and another in the pasture. This was a big hit.

Roger Clark

Roger Clark kicked it off, showing his inimitable style with a fancy loop in the arena. Craig Carr and Russell Speaker demonstrated their exceptional ability both inside the arena and out in the pasture, winning the jackpot along with the admiration of remaining onlookers.

Before horses were loaded and a string trucks and trailers headed for the highway, everyone pitched -in to clear the arena and grounds leaving the venue as pristine as they found it.

Hosts were: Owners Lainie and Ray Whitmire from Sallisaw, Oklahoma, and Ranch Manager, Matt Turner and his wife Jennifer.

The event was sanctioned by the newly formed Rocky Mountain Ranch Roping and Stock Horse Association organized by Marshall Streeter of Cheyenne, Wyoming and Mark Howes, owner of Double H Saddlery, Ft. Collins, CO.
